How we work with our doctors

In October 2014, the Competition and Markets Authority (the "CMA") published the Private Healthcare Market Investigation Order 2014 (the "Order") following its investigation into the private healthcare industry.  The Order imposed requirements on private hospital operators to disclose certain information in relation to referring clinicians (as defined by the Order) for the benefit of patients.  Full details about the investigation and the Order can be found on the CMA web page https://www.gov.uk/cma-cases/private-healthcare-market-investigation. The information provided by Aspen Healthcare below is required by the Order.

At Aspen Healthcare, we work with our doctors to ensure they can focus on high quality patient care.  In keeping with one of Aspen Healthcare’s core values ‘Investing in Excellence’ we supply in depth training and development for all of our staff.  

Claremont Private Hospital provides the following services to Consultants and/or Referring Clinicians:
 

Low-Value Services

General Services

  • Provided to ensure clinical safety, including in-house training such as Basic Life Support training
  • ​Operational services to ensure a smooth patient pathway as part of normal business such as patient admission, administrative and billing
  • ​Insurance and indemnity cover in respect of the treatment of National Health Service (NHS) patient
  • Secure data storage and IT support for computer and mobile devices to ensure the security of patient data 

Basic Workplace Amenities

  • Including tea and coffee
  • Subsidised meals on-site to the extent that they are available to staff and persons working at the facility generally
  • Stationary to the extent that they are available to staff and persons working at the facility generally
  • Mail and post-room services to the extent that they are available to staff and persons working at the facility generally

General Marketing & Promotional Services to be able to Operate a Commercial Business, Including but not Limited to

  • Production of consultant directories including website profiles
  • Production of facility branded business cards and correspondence material
  • Production of marketing material and literature, including GP and direct to patient mailers
  • Production of advertisements and media placements to promote the services of the business
  • GP educational events with a Claremont consultant speaker
  • Promotional items including branded post-it notes, pens, mousemats etc

General Corporate Hospitality, Proportionate and Reasonable to the Nature of the Business Including

  • 17.12.2014 - Consultant/GP Christmas party x 30 at £25 per head
  • 20.04.2015 - AGM, £100
  • 24.09.2015 - Consultant/GP Meal x 34 @ £20 per head
  • 25.02.2016 - Consultant/GP Meal x 32 @ £25 per head
  • 30.06.2016 - Consultant/GP Meal x 32 @ £50 per head
  • 24.11.2016 - Consultant/GP Meal x 30 @ £40 per head
  • 03.12.2016 - Rugby Game, England Vs Australia, Twickenham - 3 Consultants - £550 each including travel

Higher-Value Services

  • All Consultants with Practising Privileges who use sessional outpatient room space are issued a Consulting Room Licence.  The cost per hour for utilising rooms is £18 per hour at Claremont.
  • Where Consultants utilise fixed space within the facility (i.e. not on a sessional basis) this is charged to the Consultant under an Accommodation Agreement at £10/sqft/annum
     

Clinician Advisory Services

Private hospital operators are required to disclose details of certain paid services provided by referring clinicians to private hospital operators in addition to exercising Practising Privileges at that hospital. Please find this information below:

Dr John O'Connell, General Practitioner 
Dr O'Connell acts as our GP Advisor and Speaker for GP educational events and for this role we pay a fee of £500 per month.

Dr Robert Townsend & Dr David Partridge, Consultant Microbiologists
We have a contract with UKOMS for infection prevention advice and they employ the services of the above doctors.   The fee for this 24 hour support service is £12,000 per annum.

Valuation Methodology:

At the time of incorporation, the value of each 1% equity interest was valued using a specified valuation formula.

The formula was based upon the purchase price of Claremont Private Hospital, including the adjacent Convent buildings and land (acquired from previous owners in 2012), less a minority interest discount.
