Entropion and Ectropion Repair

This page will provide you with information about entropion and ectropion repair. For further details, you should speak to your consultant.

What is entropion and ectropion?

As we age, we may find that our bottom eyelid turns inward (entropion) or outward (ectropion). Entropion often results in the eyelashes rubbing against the cornea (see figure 1).

These conditions are common among elderly people. However, scar tissue can also cause entropion or ectropion as it can pull on the tissue, causing it to become slack.

What are the benefits of this procedure?

Surgery is performed to stop, or at very least alleviate, the symptoms associated with entropion and ectropion.

Are there any alternatives to surgery?

There are several alternatives to be aware of. First, artificial tears and ointments can help safeguard the surface of your eye. If you are suffering from entropion, your surgeon may suggest that you use tape to ensure your lashes aren’t rubbing against your cornea, or they may tell you to wear specialist, soft contact lenses. A Botox injection can be administered into the eyelid muscle to restore it to its original position, while stitches can prevent the eyelid from turning in.

What will happen during the operation?

In most cases, patients are given local anaesthetic for the procedure. If the tissue has become slack in the eyelid, your doctor may choose to remove a small section of it. A skin graft may be used if tight skin or scar tissue is the cause of the problem. Depending on the nature of your condition, and if you are having both eyes operated on, the procedure can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Risks and complications

Any risks or complications will be discussed in advance of your treatment with your expert consultant.

How long will it take to heal?

Generally, this procedure does not require an overnight stay and you will be able to return home within several hours of your operation. During recovery, you should refrain from:

  • Drinking alcohol
  • Carrying out intense exercise
  • Getting the eyelid wet
  • Wearing eye make-up
  • Staying out in the sun for too long
  • Bending down

An active lifestyle can help to improve your overall wellbeing, but you should first seek advice from your doctor. You are likely to see long-lasting results from your procedure; however you must be aware that the issue may return due to the skin loosening as you age.

Summary

Entropion and ectropion repairs aim to restore the eyelid back to its natural position, thus relieving you of any symptoms.
