Shockwave Therapy / Radial Pulse Wave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment which is helpful in providing pain relief for patients suffering from a number of common painful orthopaedic conditions or sports injuries.

How does it work?

The treatment works by passing accoustic shockwaves through the skin to the painful area. The shockwaves break down injured tissue and calcifications as well as initiating increased blood circulation to the area which in turn accelerates the body's own healing processes.

What conditions can be treated?

At Claremont, Shockwave Therapy can be used to treat conditions in the foot and ankle. It is recommended for conditions such as heel pain (Plantar Fasciitis) and tendinopathies of the Achilles tendon.

What happens at a treatment session?

Prior to your referral your diagnosis will have been confirmed by ultrasound. Your therapist will locate the painful area by palpation, or in some cases using ultrasound, then apply a contact gel before administering the shockwaves. The procedure is non-invasive and results in significant pain relief 8-10 days after the first treatment.You will also be given an exercise program.

Generally, 1-3 sessions are required over a 3 week period.  Your therapist will discuss an appropriate treatment plan with you. Each treatment session lasts approximately 10 minutes.

How successful is treatment?

Documented international results show an overall success rate of 77% for chronic conditions that have not been cured with other treatment methods. It is, however, important to be aware that whilst we would expect a positive clinical outcome, there is a chance that treatment may not improve your symptoms. Likewise it may take several months before maximum effect is achieved.
