Mr Gavin Miller is Consultant Hand Surgeon, with a private practice at Claremont for medico legal work only
He qualified from Newcastle University in 1984. After training in plastic surgery, Mr Miller went on to complete a fellowship in hand surgery in Manchester and Wrightington. He then undertook a microsurgery fellowship in Taipei, Taiwan, becoming a Consultant in Sheffield in 1997. Whilst based at the Northern General Hospital, Mr Miller led the team that set up the Sheffield Hand Centre.
Mr Miller treats all hand conditions with the exception of complex wrist problems and has a special interest in peripheral nerve and rheumatoid hand surgery. Most of his surgery is performed under local anaesthesia as a day case, using minimally invasive techniques.
Mr Miller treats patients with Raynaud’s syndrome and work-related upper limb disorders. He also has particular expertise in upper limb problems in musicians and performing artists.
Mr Miller’s research focuses on hand surgery, publishing widely in peer-reviewed journals. He has established local anaesthetic day-case approaches that are minimally invasive, and has developed an iPad application to measure patient outcomes in hand surgery,
Mr Miller is committed to training hand surgeons. As part of his work with the Council of the BSSH (1998-2002), the Interface Committee in Hand Surgery (2002-2005), and the Hand Diploma Subgroup (2006-2011), Mr Miller has helped develop the national postgraduate Diploma in Hand Surgery.
