Training & background:

Mark Wilkinson is the Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Sheffield, and a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in the NHS and privately at Claremont Private Hospital.

He specialises in the treatment of hip and knee arthritis.  He also has research expertise in hip and knee arthritis, its causes and treatment.  He also specialises in joint replacement in patients with inflammatory arthritis.

Professor Wilkinson qualified and trained in Sheffield.  He undertook a PhD in the science of hip replacement at the University of Sheffield, which he completed in 2001.  He received his specialist training in the treatment of hip and knee problems in Sheffield and at the Wrightington Hospital (where modern hip replacement surgery was first developed).  He also underwent fellowship training in hip and knee replacement surgery in Canada, Switzerland, and Japan.

He has received awards from the British Hip Society, the Orthopaedic Research Society in the United States, The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and holds the British Orthopaedic Association Robert Jones Gold Medal and Association Prize. Professor Wilkinson is also an Editorial Board member for the Journal of Orthopaedic Research in the United States and for the journal Surgery.
