Why have scar revision surgery?
If you have visible scars as the result of burns, skin problems, injury or perhaps from undergoing surgery, it’s likely - and more than understandable - that may be causing you some distress. Whether you find that it damages your confidence or stops you living life to the full; having a scar can be difficult for anybody to cope with.
About the revision procedure
Thankfully, there are a number of cosmetic treatment options now available that can help reduce the appearance of a scar, whilst also reducing the feelings of tightness and discomfort that scar tissue can cause.
These choices range from micro dermabrasion, to laser therapy, to surgery - although surgery is only necessary in some cases. The first two options work by removing the top layers of your skin, allowing the skin underneath to grow back smoother so that the scar’s appearance is lessened.
Your treatment will be performed by a qualified and experienced specialist, in the safety of a private hospital. The procedure itself takes between 30 minutes and one hour, and can usually be performed under local anaesthetic to numb the area - meaning you’ll be in and out in a day. However, in some cases the procedure will be carried out under general anaesthetic so that you will be asleep throughout.
Of course, the exact results of any cosmetic treatment will differ depending on a few factors such as your age, what type of skin you have, and - in this case - the type and severity of your scar.
Therefore, it’s important that you have realistic expectations before undergoing any treatment, and bear in mind that this particular procedure cannot guarantee complete scar removal. One of our specialists will speak with you beforehand to discuss the procedure and what effect it is likely to have for you.
