Dorsal root ganglion block (local anaesthetic or neurolytic) with our expert team

A ganglion is an abnormal lump that develops underneath the skin. The majority of ganglions form near the wrist joint, though they may also appear on the foot or ankle. Ganglions contain a thick fluid, called synovial fluid, which cushions and lubricates joints and tendons during movement. A dorsal root ganglion block is an injection around the dorsal root ganglion, which is located in close proximity to the spinal cord. The ganglion looks like a small swelling on the nerve that joins the spinal cord. This ganglion contains nerves that carry sensation.

Dorsal Root Ganglion blocks are used mainly for localised radicular pain (sciatic leg or arm pain) pain where simpler measures have not helped. They are most commonly used in the lumbar region. It may help your pain by reducing some of the pain signals. Pain relief can be short-lived although some people can get significant and lasting pain relief from these injections, it may not be a cure.

Treatment is done under local anaesthetic, meaning you’ll be awake but shouldn’t feel pain during the procedure. You'll be asked to lie on your stomach while your consultant inserts a special needle into your spine and carefully guides it towards the dorsal root ganglion. The procedure should take no longer than 30 minutes.

If you have a ganglion that is causing you pain and you’d like a quick and effective solution, explore the high-quality treatment on offer at Claremont Private Hospital.
